Human Perception of Pneumatic Tactile Cues

چکیده
The ability to combine tactile, on-the-skin, sensory cues with the kinesthetic ones that widely available force-feedback devices are able to produce is a desirable one, opening the door to the production of more realistic, compelling virtual environments. Pneumatic air-jet displays can be easily mounted on existing force-feedback devices and we believe have the potential to provide useful complimentary tactile information. However, there is little concrete psychophysical data relating to pneumatic displays — a fact that hinders their adoption. This paper addresses this challenge, and presents brief psychophysical studies examining localization rate, the two-point threshold and the stimulus intensity of cues produced by pneumatic air jets. Using insights gained from these studies, we also present a more concrete application-focused investigation where we evaluate the effect of combining tactile and force-feedback cues in a simple object manipulation task in a virtual environment. We show that task completion times are significantly improved with the addition of tactile information, validating our ideas and suggesting this topic warrants further at-

The Application of Tactile Experience in Urban Perception
Urban perception is the result of mutual transaction between human and environment and the process of perception is developed through the three continuous steps of “sensation”, “perception” and “cognition”. In the first step (sensorial perception), the environmental signals are received via sensorial sensors and each different sense based on its own essence, performance and ability has its own ...
متن کاملFluid–Structure Interaction-Based Biomechanical Perception Model for Tactile Sensing
The reproduced tactile sensation of haptic interfaces usually selectively reproduces a certain object attribute, such as the object's material reflected by vibration and its surface shape by a pneumatic nozzle array. Tactile biomechanics investigates the relation between responses to an external load stimulus and tactile perception and guides the design of haptic interface devices via a tactile...
متن کاملTactile Cueing in Haptic Visualization
Haptic visualization is a key aid in presenting real or simulated data to individuals who are blind in a form that is suitable for comprehension. Conventional techniques in haptic visualization convert complex multidimensional data into a visual form such as points, lines, graphs etc. and subsequently add haptic features such as friction and texture to the rendered form. This allows individuals...
متن کاملImportance of temporal cues for tactile spatial- frequency discrimination.
While scanning a textured surface with fingers, tactile information is encoded both spatially, by differential activation of adjacent receptors, and temporally, by changes in receptor activation during movements of the fingers across the surface. We used a tactile discrimination task to examine the dependence of human tactile perception on the availability of spatial and temporal cues. Subjects...
متن کاملA Pneumatic Tactile Sensor for Co-Operative Robots
Tactile sensors of comprehensive functions are urgently needed for the advanced robot to co-exist and co-operate with human beings. Pneumatic tactile sensors based on air bladder possess some noticeable advantages for human-robot interaction application. In this paper, we construct a pneumatic tactile sensor and apply it on the fingertip of robot hand to realize the sensing of force, vibration ...
